Signs your teen may be struggling with anxiety
Anxiety in teenagers doesn't always look like worry. It often shows up as:
-
Avoiding school, tests, sports, or social plans
-
Headaches, stomachaches, or trouble sleeping with no medical cause
-
Perfectionism: hours on homework, meltdowns over a B
-
Irritability, anger, or shutting down when pushed
-
Constant reassurance-seeking ("Are you sure it'll be okay?")
-
Panic attacks, or a fear of having one
-
Spending more and more time alone in their room or on their phone
If several of these sound familiar, it's worth a conversation. You don't need a diagnosis to reach out
Why so many Westchester teens are anxious
Anxiety comes from many sources. There are true pressures in the lives of our teens. Family conflict, changes in family structure, social challenges, "friend group" conflicts, loneliness, athletic pressure, and even existential anxieties about the state of the world. Time spent on social media and screens is a known driver of increased anxiety. All of these factors and others increase the anxious profile of today's average teen.
Many of the teens we see look like they're thriving from the outside while struggling privately. Anxiety is a common response to that pressure, and it is very treatable.
How we treat teen anxiety
We use evidence-based approaches with strong research support for adolescent anxiety, tailored to each teen:
-
Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) helps teens notice anxious thinking patterns, test them against reality, and gradually face what they've been avoiding.
-
Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT) skills build emotional regulation, distress tolerance, and communication, especially helpful for teens whose anxiety comes out as overwhelm or anger. [We also offer a DBT skills group for adolescents.]
-
Parent training and family work gives parents concrete strategies to support their teen without accidentally feeding the anxiety.
Our clinicians have a wide range of training and are experienced working with teens where they live. We . We match each family with the clinician whose training and style fit their teen best.
How parents are involved
Teens need a private space to talk, and we protect that. Parents also need guidance. We typically include parents at the start to understand the history, check in periodically on progress, and offer parent sessions when changes at home will help. We'll explain how confidentiality works for your teen's age before treatment begins.
